Why choose David Todd?

Wide-Ranging Project Experience

David’s portfolio covers residential homes, house renovations and a variety of commercial and industrial buildings — including offices, retail spaces, schools, churches and community facilities. Each project is approached with creativity, practicality and a deep understanding of architectural design that suits local conditions.

Tools & Technology

Working from his dedicated home office in Nelson, David uses ArchiCAD — a professional architectural CAD software — to produce accurate plans and 3D visualisations. This helps clients see exactly how their new home, renovation or commercial project will look in its setting, making design choices clearer and more confident.

Design That Works Within Budget

David’s approach begins with listening. By understanding your vision and budget, he develops plans and design solutions that make the most of your site’s natural features — sun, views and topography — while keeping the project achievable and cost‑effective.

Professional Development & Membership

Committed to keeping his architectural design skills current, David regularly attends industry seminars and training. As a long‑standing member of ADNZ (Architectural Designers New Zealand), he has contributed to the profession as both local and national president, and was awarded Life Membership in 2008 for his service.

"We would like to express our thanks and gratitude to you for the exceptional design you created to do the major 'make-over' for our originally modest home. After having used your services in 2005 to do a partial renovation and minor changes to our home we were very satisfied that we didn't wish to look any further for a different architectural designer when it came to do the 'big one'! The formal entry you designed which has also allowed us to borrow light from the South has made for a beautifully designed home which has proved to be a very light and airy, practically, liveable house which is exactly what we requested. And all the external changes including the roof has finished it off to the point where we now have a totally new home. We are also able to now enjoy both/either the two new decks which have allowed amazing indoor/outdoor living according to the weather on the day! Thank you again David, we are proud of our new home and we feel as though we are on holiday every day!"

“ We have had the pleasure of working with David on one rebuild, one major renovation and one new build over a period of more than twenty years. Devon is a bit of an amateur architect so always had firm ideas about what was to be achieved but not so much on how that should happen! David was always very patient with an excellent understanding of the intent, and applied his technical and design skills to ensure an outstanding and affordable result. He has a very good rapport with and understanding of the local council requirements ensuring a smooth process. In combination with excellent builders we have had three enjoyable and satisfying building projects that delivered on our dreams. David is easy to work with and has the skill, style and integrity to deliver a successful project and remain friends. We highly recommend him.”

“When I purchased the property at 837 Kenepuru Road in the Marlborough Sounds, New Zealand, it was a pristine 1.5 hectares of untouched land. My vision was to transform this space into a lush, jungle-like retreat, intensifying the native bush with subtropical plantings to create a true getaway. As the years passed and the landscape flourished, I began to envision a small bach that would harmonize with this vibrant environment.

I had three primary goals for the project: first, to design a compact unit that seamlessly blended with the natural surroundings; second, to ensure the building was low-maintenance while maximising the breathtaking sea views and sun exposure; and third, to incorporate high-quality materials and craftsmanship for lasting durability amidst the enhanced bush setting.

In selecting David Todd of David Todd Architectural Designer, I sought a collaborative partner who could bring my vision to life. David’s approach is rooted in attentive listening; he took the time to understand my ideal home through thoughtful interviews and a comprehensive questionnaire. His ability to balance my aspirations with budgetary considerations was crucial in crafting the optimal design solution for this unique site.

As I took on the role of project manager, it was essential that David quickly grasped the essence of my vision. Despite the challenges posed by the remote location—particularly in terms of delivering materials and supplies—David delivered a design that was not only architecturally stunning but also met all my objectives.

Driving down the path surrounded by lush Nikau palms, black tree ferns, kawakawa, and rangiora plants, I was thrilled to see how the seaward-facing cottage effortlessly blended into the landscape. Each decision made during the design phase was meticulously crafted to ensure that the final result aligned with my vision and the physical requirements of the site. David’s expertise was instrumental in creating a design that truly complements the environment.

Now that the bach is complete, it stands as an architectural gem nestled within the dense forest, a sanctuary for my wife, family, and friends to enjoy.

Working with David was a pleasure; his professionalism and creativity made the entire process smooth and enjoyable. I wholeheartedly recommend him to anyone seeking an exceptional architectural experience, and I would not hesitate to work with him again in the future.”
