This mid market 3 bedroom home is at the end of a quiet cal-de-sac in a new subdivision in Richmond, Nelson. The clients wanted a simple home, completed to high standards, that had outdoor living areas to catch the sun at various times of the day and be protected from the wind. Positioning the Family/Dining Room on the north east corner has enabled the owners to keep an eye on what is happening in the street.
The Master bedroom has a spacious Ensuite with tiled shower and large walk in wardrobe and views out onto the courtyard. Bedroom 3 has an internal window between Hallway and outside patio to give natural light and sunshine in the winter. A formal Lounge with direct access from both the Entry and Family/Dining has views to both patios, a central gas fire and is a welcoming space to watch TV or read a book. The Owners comment, “We looked to create a home of superior quality with maximum natural light and nominal maintenance. The u-shaped design provides great indoor/outdoor flow through three sets of stacker doors together with absolute privacy plus shelter on the large patio from both the predominant north and south winds”.
To meet the Clients wishes the design naturally lead to a “U” shaped house with a courtyard, which provides the protection from the wind and enables plenty of sun to come into the house. Both patios are hidden from the street which gives privacy when outdoors. Direct access to the northern patio is from the Family Room and the southern patio access is via the Entry.
One of the clients requests was a cedar garage door. With the garage being beside the front door the choice of schist was a natural compliment product. The schist stonework panels were added to the chimney and around the Entry and was then brought into the house on one wall of the Entry.
The superior quality is maintained by the use of metal shake roof and plastered polystyrene backed wall cladding with feature trim around the windows to provide an accent. Internally it achieved with underfloor heating to the ceramic tiles to Kitchen, Entry and Bathrooms, glass shower screens and level access shower in the Ensuite. A modern “waterfall” Kitchen with simple lines and well chosen light fittings ensure quality is maintained.
